How to Use AdSense Code on Multiple Websites To Earn More

AdSense is a Google program for website publishers who want to earn advertising revenue on their websites. Once you have been approved for a Google AdSense account, you can use that account to publish ads on any of your business or personal websites, provided those sites adhere to Google AdSense terms and conditions. Although it's not mandatory, adding a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) Channel to your AdSense account for each website will make it easier to track your advertising revenue. You can also use Custom Channels to group your ads by design or location across multiple websites.

2. Select "URL Channels" from the Content section of the left menu.
3. Click the "New URL Channel" button. A new window opens.
4. Type the URL of each of your websites into the text box, placing each on a separate line. You can add up to 500 URLs. Click the "Add URL Channels" button when you are finished adding your websites. Once you have placed your ads on these websites, your AdSense report will break down the number of impressions, clicks and revenue received for each website.

Adding Custom Channels

1. Select "Custom Channels" from the Content section of the left menu if you want to track groups of ads on one website or across multiple websites. For example, you can use a channel for all banner ads, all ads on pages with similar content, or all ads of the same color scheme, etc.
2. Click the "New Custom Channel" button. Type a name for the channel in the "Name" field. Select any ad units you have already created from the list to add them to the channel.
3. Click the "Save" button. You can create up to 500 custom channels. Once you have added ads to a channel, your AdSense report will display the impressions, clicks and revenue for each Custom Channel.

Adding Ad Units

1. Click the "Ad Units" link in the Content section of your AdSense page.
2. Click the "New Ad Unit" button at the top of the page.
3. Type a name for the ad unit in the "Name" text field to help you identify this ad from others you create.
4. Click the "Ad Size" menu to select a size for the ad. Click the "Ad Type" menu to select text ads, image/rich media ads or both.
5. Select one or more custom channels for the ad unit if desired.
6. Configure the style of your ad by selecting one of the displayed styles or by clicking "Use Custom Settings" to define your own style.
7. Click the "Save and Get Code" button.
8. Copy the code provided and paste it where desired on any page of your websites that conforms to the Google AdSense terms, conditions and policies.

Warning

  • Review the Google AdSense Terms and Conditions and the AdSense Program Policies before placing ads on a new website. How Does AdSense Work?

Whether you’ve been blogging for five minutes or five years, monetizing is one of those topics that almost always comes up. Should I try to make money from blogging? Can people really make a living online? How should I try to make money from my blog?
Google AdSense is one of the most common ways to monetize, though I’ll warn you now: AdSense is NOT a get rich quick scheme. In fact, it can take a long time to make more than a few pennies. But it can also pay off big in the long run.

What Is AdSense?

AdSense is a program that allows bloggers and website owners to make money by displaying Google ads. You’ve probably seen the ads all over the place, including in Google search results. Basically, Google gets the largest cut and you get a small percentage. There are two ways to make money from AdSense:
  • Impressions – this is based on the number of page views of pages or posts with ads
  • Clicks – this is based on how many people click on the ads (don’t EVER click your own – more on this later)
To make it as basic as possible, you sign up for an AdSense account and add the code to your blog or website. You can choose how your ads look, where they show up, and even what kind of ads you’ll accept. Once you get to a minimum threshold of $100, Google will either send you a paper check or make a direct deposit into your bank account.

Who’s Eligible?

If you use Blogger, you can use the Monetize tab to set up and manage an AdSense account.
If you use self-hosted WordPress, you can visit the AdSense website and apply for an account. You’ll receive a code that you can place wherever you’d like, or you can use a plugin to help with placement.
*If you use free WordPress, you cannot use AdSense, but you can use WordAds if you have your own custom domain. (Just another reason why self-hosted WordPress is better.)

How Much Can I Make?

As I told you before, you will not get rich quick using AdSense. It took me 9 months to make $2 (yes, two dollars) on my personal blog. However, I made $81 last month. That’s still pathetic compared to many blogs – some people can earn a full-time income from AdSense alone. But it takes a LONG time to get there, and you have to have a ton of traffic.
Some ads are worth more money per click than others. This is also affected by the amount of traffic you get, the keywords the person searched for, the percentage of visitors who click on a particular ad, etc. There are a LOT of factors that determine how much you’ll make, but a rule of thumb is that newer blogs simply won’t make as much money.
My personal blog is about 14 months old. Some days, I don’t get any ad clicks at all and I might still make 10 cents or so just from impressions. Sometimes every click is worth $2 or more. Yesterday the clicks were worth a whopping 26 cents each.
Many people get impatient when they’ve had the code up for a month or two and haven’t made more than a few pennies. If you’re looking for something that will pay TODAY, AdSense may not be for you. And to be honest, I don’t know of anything instant – if I did, you can bet I’d be using it!

How Can I Make More From AdSense?

Basically, your best bet for ad clicks is increasing your search traffic. When people are trying to solve a problem, they usually turn to search engines like Google or Bing. If you have a post that solves that problem, using SEO will help your post rank well in search results. SEO will also help AdSense serve up relevant ads, so when people click on your blog post, the ads may answer the exact question they’re asking. Result? Ad clicks!
Here’s an example. Let’s say I write a post about the health risks of liposuction. I use SEO techniques to help Google realize what my post is about, and my post is the third one when someone searches for “liposuction risks.” AdSense also knows what my post is about, so people reading my post will see an ad that might say something like, “Safe liposuction services in New Hampshire” (or wherever).
If the person is interested in finding the safest place for liposuction, s/he is likely to click that ad. As I said before, the rate per click depends on a lot of factors, but my concern is making sure that people read MY post and not others! If they go to another blog to read about liposuction risks, they’re possibly clicking that person’s ads instead of mine.

IMPORTANT!

There are a few things you need to know about AdSense before you ever put the code on your blog.
1. Never, ever click your own ads. In case you aren’t aware, Google pretty much knows everything. And they can tell if you’re clicking your own ads. It’s very tempting to click about 50 times and make some money, but all it will do is result in being banned.
2. Never, ever encourage friends or family to click your ads. Same as above. You can and will be banned from AdSense, and don’t ever think Google won’t figure it out. I don’t know how they do it, but I have seen it happen to people I know. JUST DON’T.
3. Pay attention to your ad clicks. If you average 2 clicks a month and you suddenly get 100 in a day, chances are that something is wrong. If you’ve pissed someone off and they decide to fight back by clicking all over the place, you can get banned even though you didn’t do anything.
4. Never rely on AdSense as your sole income source. Even if you get really good at SEO and you have 100 websites making thousands of dollars each month in AdSense, you never know when something could happen to trigger Google’s no-no sensors. You can make good money with AdSense, but you should also use other monetization strategies just in case.
5. Don’t use more than 3 ad blocks on a single page. Google allows up to 3 ad blocks on a page. So if you have one in your header, one in your sidebar, and one at the end of your post, that’s the limit for that page. Also, don’t plaster ads all over the place and annoy your regular readers! There are ways to implement the ads without making your site ugly.

What Questions Do You Have?

It’s impossible to cover a topic as broad as AdSense in a single post. This overview gives you an idea of what it’s for and how it works, but it still may not answer enough questions to make sense for you.
Let me know what would be most helpful. Do you want screenshots and step-by-step instructions on inserting the code? More tips on how to improve your earnings? A breakdown of all the acronyms you see in your AdSense account, like CPC, RPM, and CTR? Leave your questions in the comments and I’ll address them in future posts.
Which is the Safest AdSense Payment Method?

When you become an AdSense Publisher, your goal is to increase monetization of your websites by realizing AdSense payments from the cost per click and/or AdSense search programs. You will earn income every time a visitor to your site clicks on one of the ads you have agreed to host or clicks on ads located on the search results pages. You will be paid when your AdSense earnings have met the payment thresholds if you are in compliance of policies and there are no holds on your AdSense account.
Before you can choose a payment method, your AdSense revenue must meet the payment method selection threshold. You will than choose your AdSense payment options by editing the payment details on the account setting page. You will choose from 5 different methods of payments and it is most important that you fully understand your choices and select the one most suited to your needs. Each of these payment options have pros and cons and eligibility maybe further determined by your own location and type of accounts, such as individual or business. It is recommended that you review the AdSense Payment Guide as to when payments are made, the payment process including the 5 steps to setting up your account, and essential information such as payment of taxes on AdSense earnings before finalizing your payment methods. The following AdSense payment options are available:

US Checks or Local Currency Checks
When you select this payment method, you will have the option to receive US funds or currency related to your country. The checks are drawn on Citibank, valid for one year from date of issuance. However, if you’re choosing local currency checks, you must review the list of eligible countries to ensure participation. You must also ensure that your financial institution will accept Citibank checks for negotiation keeping in mind that there will be fees issued. Publishers receive their checks about 2 to 4 weeks after the mailing date and sometimes longer when located in remote rural areas. You can choose Secured Express Delivery option which is quicker and safer and takes 5 to 7 days for delivery. There is a fee for courier services if you choose receiving checks as your payment option. The cons with this method of payment include time delays/fees in receiving and processing checks and the possibility of losing and having to reissue checks. Tracking aids are available through your AdSense account to ensure that you can follow your payments.
Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT)
An EFT is an electronic service that directly deposits your AdSense payments into your bank account and in your local currency. EFT’s are available to publishers whom addresses are in the supported countries listed. These online payment methods are the quickest, simplest and safest of all the payment options. However, while it does require you to have a bank account, you do not have to travel to pick up funds or negotiate checks. To ensure that this online payment method works, a test amount is processed to ensure that it is accurately deposited to your account. This service is available to all levels of AdSense account holders. You cannot use a Bank Account in another country due to tax and security reasons unless you change the country field in your payment address. There are no drawbacks to online payment methods other than for those whom would prefer to not disclose or have a bank account to receive these funds.
Western Union Quick Cash
Western Union is a worldwide money transfer service, but before choosing this AdSense payment option, you must ensure that Western Union is available in your country and that they offer the Quick Cash services. If you want cash upfront than Western Union Quick Cash is the payment method for you. You are allowed to receive your AdSense payments in cash available for pickup at your local Western Union Agent one day after being sent following the normal payment schedule established. You don’t have to wait for mail or courier services to deliver your check. There are no fees charged. You do not have the hassles of dealing with a bank and their related high fees, depositing and waiting for these funds to clear. While payment is in US Dollars, most Western Unions will give you the option to exchange these funds into local currency at the conversion rates applicable that day. You have 60 days in which to pick up your payment from a Western Union, otherwise funds are returned to your account. This payment option is only available to individual publishers due to the personal ID required by Western Union to be presented in order to receive funds. Overall, Western Union Quick Cash is worthy of consideration for those wanting quick, no hassle payment options and prefer cash in their pocket.
Rapida
Rapida is another payment method that allows users to receive their AdSense payments in Cash, however, this service is available only in Russia at this time and you have to find a local post branch that offers this service. You don’t have to worry about bank fees and long clearing timeframes associated with depositing checks. This method of payment is also only available to individuals and there may be limitations on the payment amounts. Users of this payment option generally have a 3 working day delay from the date shown on your “payment details” page. Payment is in US Dollars with the ability to exchange into local currency based on the local post branch conversion rates applicable that day.
Conclusion: The safest method of payment is the online payment method known as the Electronic Fund Transfer which puts the funds directly into your account as soon as AdSense payments are available. This is followed by the cash in your pocket offered by either Western Union or Rapida. Choose wisely when making these decisions.
How To Monetize Your Website with Google AdSense

Google AdSense is one of the most popular methods for monetizing websites, and despite what you may have heard, it can still be an excellent way to support your content production efforts. In order to get the best results, it’s important to try different advertisement strategies. In this article, I will give you an introduction to AdSense and show you how to get the most out of this ad service.

These recommendations are based on my own experience with multiple websites.

About Google AdSense

The AdSense concept is based on the idea of showing advertisements which fit the content of your website as much as possible. For example, if your website is about shoes, you are likely to see shoe-related ads. The AdSense service examines your page content to find out which ads fit the interest of your readers best. The better your site and advertisements match, the better the results will be.

Ad Formats

AdSense offers multiple ad formats from which website publishers can choose. There is a large range of widely used ad formats, such as skyscrapers, leaderboards and rectangles. These banner formats feature both text ads and graphical ads. You can adjust the font and colors of text ads so they match your website design or to make them stand out more. Graphical ads can be static images, Flash animated banners or modern HTML5 animated banners.
Of course you can select mobile banners too. This banner type is designed for display on smaller screens of mobile devices, such as smartphones. If you have a responsive website and would like to make your banners responsive as well, you can choose responsive ads. AdSense will look at the available space within your website layout and automatically display the best banner size. Other than that, AdSense gives you the option to use link units. This banner type is based on text links and its font and colors can be adjusted as well.

Applying For Google AdSense

In order to display Google AdSense banners on your website, you need to apply for the AdSense program first, which can be done through the AdSense website . The review process takes a couple of days. Google will evaluate your website to see whether it complies with the program policies and whether they will allow you as a new AdSense publisher. Please consult the Google AdSense website to learn more about the rules and the registration procedure.

Let’s Get Started

As soon as you are enrolled in the program, you can start publishing AdSense ads on your website(s). Using the AdSense administration panel, you can create a new ad. First, enter a name, for example your site name and the ad size (a good idea if you publish multiple sites so it’s easier to identify your ads). Then select the ad size, the ad type (text and/or graphical ads) and adjust the font and color scheme if applicable. For analytics purposes, you can create channels and assign ads to them.
You can also determine what you want AdSense to do in case no banners are available, for example showing a blank space, a solid color or a custom backup ad. For almost any website Google has a lot of ads available, so in most cases you won’t see these banner placeholders. After that step the HTML code you need to run ads on your website is displayed. Copy the code and paste it in the appropriate place within your website template.

Ad Statistics

Google AdSense offers extensive statistics on the usage of the advertisements on your website. You can see the number of ad views and ad clicks, for example. Depending on the type of ad, AdSense pays you for either ad impressions (CPI) or ad clicks (CPC). In the next part of this article I will provide you with tips on how to optimize the number of impressions and clicks.

How To Get The Most Out Of AdSense

One of the most important things when publishing AdSense ads is to use an acceptable number of ads. Google allows up to three banners and three link units on each page. In my opinion, the number of banners you should publish depends on the amount of content on your page. For example, if your webpage includes a lot of content (comparable to a page from a printed newspaper) it’s no problem to display the maximum amount of banners, especially when they are integrated well into the page content. After all, you don’t want to lose visitors due to aggressive ad placements – for example, if the user has to scroll past a couple of banners to reach the ‘real’ content of the webpage.
While it may be tempting to maximize your ad performance, it’s important to consider the user experience too. Users visit your website because they are interested in your content, but at the same time you would like to receive the most revenue from those visits. The key to success is to place ads on places where users spend the most time during their visit: next to or within your main content and near the navigation parts. Important locations are for example the main menu and the spot at the end of your page content. By doing so you can give your visitors what they want while also getting what you want.
Banner placement shouldn’t be an afterthought. I recommend thinking about banner placement when designing your website layout. In general, these are the best performing ad formats, sorted by proportion:
Banner typeBanner size(s)
Leaderboards728×90 and 970×90
Rectangle banners250×250, 300×250 and 336×280
Skyscrapers120×600, 160×600 and 300×600
Horizontal link units728×15 and 468×15
Vertical link units160×90, 180×90 and 200×90

Example Of Ads On A Typical Content Page

A typical content site consists of a header featuring a logo, a main navigation menu, a content article, and a page footer. In the image below you can see a couple of ad placements that I would suggest in such cases. Which banner size you choose depends on the available space within your website layout.
Don’t display a banner as the first element on your webpage. It’s better to display your site header first, for example a logo, a search box and the main menu. If you display a banner as the first element, users will ignore that banner and scroll down automatically.
Because the main menu is a very important way to interact with your site, your visitors will use it frequently. As that part of your site receives so much attention, it’s a good idea to display an AdSense banner next to it, for example below the main menu to keep your website header neat and tidy.
On some websites it’s profitable to display a horizontal AdSense link unit below the main menu. Link units consist of text links that fit the look and feel of your main menu, which is frequently a horizontal link list as well. You will receive the best results by adjusting the colors of the link unit so they match your website layout.
The space below your horizontal main menu is also a great spot to display a leaderboard banner. This banner will be viewed above the main content of your webpage, so in most cases it will be visible without scrolling (visible above the fold). The user will notice the banner when he scans the webpage to see where the main content starts. When he starts to look at the main content, the leaderboard banner will be within eyesight.

Content Area

Rectangle banners such as the 250×250, 300×250 and 336×280 are also strong performers. Thanks to their size they can be integrated within your webpage content, for example aligned to the upper right corner of your article.
On my own websites, I learned that the link unit could be profitable if placed well. As this banner type looks like it is part of the webpage, it can give great results, for example when displaying a link unit at the end of an article. When a user finishes reading an article they enjoyed, it’s likely they will click on one of the links in the link unit to learn more about the same topic. Pay attention to making it seamless, but don’t try to fool the user into thinking the links are a part of the actual website – not only will Google ban you if they look at your page, it doesn’t make for a good experience for your readers and they’ll stop coming back. If your article has a white background, it works well to give the link unit a white border and white background so it blends well in your site layout. Besides that, you can choose from a couple of fonts so the AdSense banners have the same look and feel as your website. This layout strategy applies to other banner sizes as well.

Column Next to Content Area

Most websites have a smaller column to the left or right, featuring an overview of the latest or most popular articles, additional content or other messages. Such columns, which are positioned next to the main content, are a great spot for displaying ads, for example vertically oriented banners such as the 120×600, 160×600 and 300×600 skyscrapers.

Show Smaller Banners In Ad Spaces

I recommend allowing Google AdSense to display smaller banners in ad spaces that are actually meant for larger banners. For example, the 336 x 280 ad space can display a 300 x 250 banner as well. The same applies to the 970 x 90 ad space: it can show a 728 x 90 banner without problems. In such cases the smaller banners will be displayed in the center of the ad space so that everything still looks good. By enabling this option you receive banners from a bigger banner pool, meaning higher revenue.

Mobile Banner In Mobile Version

As more and more people visit websites using their smartphone, it’s a good idea to display the AdSense mobile banner in the mobile version of your website, for example beneath the mobile navigation menu.

Page-Level Ads

In April 2016, Google introduced AdSense’s next generation ads called ‘page-level ads’. These ads are specifically designed for use on mobile websites and show ads automatically in the right format and at the right time. Page-level ads are only shown when they are most valuable; Google determines this for your visitor automatically.
Page-level ads are available as anchor/overlay ads (fixed horizontal banners at the bottom of the screen) and vignette ads (full screen banners). You only have to include a piece of code in the pages where you would like these ads to appear. Page-level ads don’t count towards the page ad limit. If your website has a mobile version, I recommend to use at least the anchor/overlay ad and to try the performance of vignette ads.

Show Both Text And Graphical Ads

Be sure to opt-in for displaying both text and graphical ads when creating new AdSense banners. By doing so, you increase the available ad inventory. Most text ads are CPC based (paid on a cost-per-click basis) and most graphical ads are CPM (paid on cost-per-impression). AdSense has an advanced system that determines which ads will give you the highest earnings and by enabling both text and image ads, you will receive the best results.

Gambling Related Ads

By default gambling related ads are turned off by Google AdSense. If your website is targeted at adults, you can change this setting so gambling ads may appear in your site. This can be profitable for certain types of website, and you will have to make that determination yourself. Log into your AdSense account, go to ‘Allow & block ads’, choose your site in the list to the left and click on the tab ‘Sensitive categories’. At the bottom of that page, you can allow gambling related ads.

Interesting Keywords In The First Paragraphs

It’s important to include interesting keywords in the first paragraphs of your webpage content. When the webpage loads and the AdSense banners are requested, Google scans your webpage and determines which ads fit your content best. Google thinks the first paragraphs on your webpage are the most important and that’s why the ads will be based on the keywords in those paragraphs as much as possible. When you are set up to receive banners that fit your content and target audience as well as possible, you increase your revenue while delivering more value to readers.

Load The AdSense Banner With The Highest CTR First

Let’s say you have three AdSense banners on your webpage. Using AdSense, you can see which of those banners has the highest click-through-rate (CTR). It’s a good idea to load the banner with the highest CTR first. The best performing banner should come first in the HTML structure of your page, even if it’s displayed in the middle or at the bottom of the page. The reason behind this? When a page is loaded and the AdSense banners are requested, AdSense fills the first banner with the highest paying ads.

Experiment And Experiment

As all websites are different, it’s important to figure out which ad strategy works best in your case. I recommend trying different banner formats, ad placements, fonts and colors. Even small changes such as color adjustments can make a big difference in how a banner performs. AdSense helps you do these kind of experiments. Log in with your AdSense account and go to My ads > Content > Experiments for more information.

More On AdSense

If you want to read more about Google AdSense and how to optimize your website revenue, I suggest you check out the official Google AdSense blog called Inside AdSense . On the official Google AdSense YouTube channel you’ll also find videos with interesting optimization tips.

Conclusion

Google AdSense is still a great way to monetize websites. AdSense provides a wide range of banner formats from which webmasters can choose. It’s important to integrate AdSense banners into your website layout as seamlessly as possible; ad placement shouldn’t be an afterthought when designing commercial websites. The key to success is to place ads in the places where users spend the most time during their visit: next to or within your main content and near the navigation areas.
Be sure to experiment a lot to find out which ad strategy works best in your case.
